Teens

Teens

What kind of medical care is provided to teens?

Teens are presented with unique medical concerns, and at Newport Medical Clinic in Port Moody, we provide care and services to patients between the ages of 13-19. Teenagers should visit their doctor annually so that changes in physical, mental and social development can be documented. Our physicians also offer advice about healthy lifestyle choices, including good nutrition, proper exercise and safety measures.

What can my teenager expect at the doctor’s office?

If your teenager has a chronic medical condition, or certain signs or symptoms, you may need to schedule more frequent visits than an annual check-up. Our medical care includes screenings for high blood pressure, depression, eating disorders, obesity and, if indicated, hyperlipidermia (an excess of cholesterol and/or other fats in the blood). Older teens may be screened for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). We will also check your son or daughter’s vision, hearing and the curvature of their spine for possible scoliosis.

As teenagers go through puberty, issues of sexual health can be addressed. Young women are referred to gynecologists, while young men are checked for hernias and testicular cancer. We can also discuss behaviors and emotional problems that may indicate depression. Sports injuries will also be evaluated, especially if they are severe or long-lasting.

Which immunizations should my child have had by age 13?

If your son or daughter is 13 or older, they should have received the following immunizations:

  • dTap (for diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Chickenpox (varicella), if they have not had chickenpox

You and your child can also receive the influenza vaccine each year to ward off the flu. If you have any questions or concerns about vaccines, please give our office a call at (604) 461-0016.

What is acute disease care?

Acute disease care aims to treat and manage the symptoms of acute illnesses. Acute diseases often develop rapidly but only last for a short amount of time (days to weeks). In some cases, the symptoms improve on their own and the recovery time is quick. Self-management is also very important, in terms of prevention. Examples of acute illnesses include:

  • asthma attacks
  • bronchitis
  • common colds
  • influenza
  • lacerations
  • pneumonia
  • respiratory infections
  • strep throat
  • simple bone breaks

What is chronic disease care?

Chronic disease care aims to control the symptoms of chronic illnesses. Chronic diseases develop slowly but worsen over an extended period of time (months to years). And unfortunately, these diseases cannot be cured. But managing their symptoms can be achieved with the proper health care plan and regular visits to your doctor. At Newport Medical Clinic, we can provide you with prescription medication, healthy eating advice, physical or occupational therapy referrals and other ancillary services. In order to keep certain chronic conditions at bay, we recommend implementing healthy lifestyle habits. Routine physical activity, eating right, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting your sun exposure and abstaining from drugs and excessive alcohol are all extremely beneficial for your short and long-term health. Examples of chronic diseases include:

  • alzheimer’s disease
  • arthritis
  • diabetes (type 1 & 2)
  • dysthymia (chronic depression)

Older Adult Care

What is older adult (geriatric) care?

Geriatric care is the branch of medicine that focuses on the health and medical care of adults who are 65 and older. At every stage of life, people have very particular healthcare concerns. For older patients, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure are all of higher concern. More than half of the people who are 65 or older usually have multiple medical issues.

Prescribing the right medication to patients with multiple health issues can be very complex and must be delicately weighed. A drug that might treat one health concern could potentially make another one worse. Many older adults take multiple medications and they can cause problematic side effects and drug interactions. This is why geriatric care is so specialized and important. At Newport Medical Clinic in Port Moody, British Columbia, we provide geriatric exams to patients in the area.

What is a geriatric exam?

Geriatric exams, or geriatric wellness exams, include discussions and screenings of the unique medical conditions that affect older patients. We can accommodate two separate examinations if you become easily fatigued. Generally, a physical exam is given. We will ask you about any changes to your health, body and lifestyle, as well as any new symptoms or ailments that you’re experiencing. Arthritis, cancer and dementia screenings can all be provided.

How long will the exam last?

Geriatric wellness exams vary depending on your individual needs. On average, they take longer than physical exams for younger patients. Our physicians will take the time to pay attention to all of your health concerns and symptoms that need to be addressed. Your physical exam will rely on your recollection of your day-to-day and any noticeable changes to your weight, mood and overall physical & mental health. Our physicians have the experience and knowledge needed to treat all geriatric patients.

Women’s Health

What is the focus of women’s health?

Women’s health is an important medical topic because women are presented with unique health issues. Some health issues affect women much differently than men. For instance:

  • osteoporosis and arthritis are known to affect women more than men
  • women are more likely to pass away following a heart attack
  • women are more likely to show signs of anxiety and depression
  • women are more likely to get urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • the effects of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be more serious for women than men

The most common medical concerns for women include menopause, pregnancy and conditions of the female organs. For a healthy pregnancy, early and regular prenatal care are extremely important. Screenings for breast cancer and cervical cancer are recommended, as are bone density tests for osteoporosis.

Why is gynecological care important?

Gynecological care and routine screenings are essential for the early detection and prevention of precancers, cancers and other health conditions. From contraception to menopause, gynecologic care covers a wide range of topics and the physicians at Newport Medical Clinic will help you maintain your overall health. Women should schedule Pap tests to properly screen for cervical cancer.

What are Pap tests?

Pap tests, or Pap smears, are one of the most important screenings for women. The Pap test can save lives by detecting cancers and precancers in the cervix. Precancers are cell changes that could potentially become cancer if not properly treated. These tests should be scheduled every three years between the ages of 25 and 69. Women with weakened immune systems may need to schedule tests more frequently.

If you have had a hysterectomy, or your cervix has been removed and you do not have a history of cervical cancer or abnormal Pap results, you do not need to schedule a Pap smear. If you are 65 or older and your last three tests were normal, with no abnormal test results within the past 10 years, you will no longer need to schedule Pap tests.

What can I expect during a Pap test?

During the exam, a speculum is used to open the vagina so that the cervix is visible. A brush is then used to swipe a few cells from the inside and surface of the cervix. The collected cells are sent away to a lab for testing. Pap tests may be mildly uncomfortable but you should not experience any pain. The results usually take 1-3 weeks to come back. Most of the time the results are normal, but should you get abnormal results, it does not always mean that you have cancer. Regardless of your results, we will always discuss the next steps with you.

Immunizations / Vaccinations

What are immunizations?

Immunizations, or vaccinations, are lab-made proteins or small amounts of a weakened or killed virus/bacteria that are injected into a patient in order to imitate and prevent that same virus/bacteria. When your child gets a vaccine, he or she is being injected with a small amount or weakened form of a disease. This triggers the body’s immune response, causing it to produce antibodies to fight that virus or induce other processes that help the immune system. Going forward, their body will either be prepared to fight that same disease in the future or the vaccine will reduce its severity.

Thanks to vaccines, we have also been able to eliminate cases of smallpox and polio. Certain vaccines only need to be given once, but some require boosters to maintain their successful immunization.

Which immunizations should my child get?

Immunizations can help to prevent the spread of serious diseases and viruses, such as the mumps, the measles and whooping cough. Many schools and daycares require proof of immunization and it is very important to keep your children up-to-date on their vaccines. The recommended vaccines for children from birth to the age of 18 include:

  • diphtheria – affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat and can be deadly
  • haemophilus influenzae type B – can cause pneumonia and makes it hard for people to breathe
  • hepatitis A – a highly contagious infection of the liver
  • hepatitis B – a life-threatening infection of the liver
  • human papillomavirus (HPV) – can cause cervical, vaginal, anal, throat, or penile cancer or genital warts in adolescents
  • influenza – the flu
  • measles – symptoms include a cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, fever, a sore throat and a red, blotchy skin rash
  • meningococcal – infections of the brain, spinal cord and bloodstream
  • mumps – a viral infection that affects the salivary glands
  • pertussis – whooping cough
  • pneumococcal – infections can lead to ear and sinus infections, pneumonia and bloodstream infections
  • poliovirus – infects one’s brain and spinal cord, leading to paralysis
  • rotavirus – causes an inflammation of the stomach and intestines
  • rubella – symptoms include a low-grade fever, sore throat and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
  • tetanus – painful muscle spasms that start in the jaw and can lead to death
  • varicella – chickenpox

Vaccines are important for you and your child to get because it is much easier and much more cost-effective to prevent diseases than it is to treat them.

Minor Procedures

Which minor procedures does Newport Medical Clinic provide?

At Newport Medical Clinic in Port Moody, British Columbia, we provide minor procedures, including stitches, wound care and dermatologic care. If you or your child has suffered a cut that requires stitches, we can help. We can also treat any wounds or lacerations that don’t require a trip to the emergency room. But even in situations that require immediate medical care, you can take advantage of our walk-in clinic. With our dermatologic care, we can diagnose and address rashes, moles, lumps and other skin conditions.

What are the signs that a cut needs stitches?

It isn’t always easy to tell if a cut needs to be stitched up. If you experience a cut that:

  • is gaping, deep or jagged
  • bleeds profusely without stopping after 20 minutes of direct pressure
  • feel numbs
  • is in a limb that doesn’t function properly after being cut
  • is on the face or another area of body where scarring will be an issue

then you should seek medical care. We will be able to determine if your cut requires stitches. For any cuts you experience, remember to apply direct pressure to help control the bleeding. If possible, it may also help to raise the injured area above the level of your heart. Punctured wounds will not require stitches, though we still recommend that you make an appointment with us. This is especially true if you have not had a tetanus shot in more than 5 years.

Skin Concerns

What  dermatologic concerns can Newport Medical Clinic help me with?

Evelin Ibrahim, MD and Ihab Ibrahim, MD are trained to identify and treat common skin conditions, including moles, skin tags, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, warts, chicken pox, psoriasis, rosacea and hives. If you have any spots on your body that you are worried about, we encourage you to discuss them with us. Any notable changes to your moles should be inspected and discussed. If we do suspect that a spot may be cancerous, we will order a biopsy.

  • Moles are benign skin growths that appear as small, dark brown spots. They are mostly harmless and do not not produce any symptoms.
  • Skin tags are benign growths that look like stalks of “hanging” skin. They typically appear where skin-to-skin friction appears, such as the eyelids, neck, upper chest, underarms and groin. Symptoms are uncommon, although a skin tag may grow irritated or start bleeding.
  • Eczema is a condition in which patches of skin become itchy and inflamed. In some cases, blisters develop.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis causes scaly patches, red skin and stubborn dandruff. This condition usually develops on the scalp, though it can also affect oily areas of the body, including the ears, eyebrows, eyelids, ears, sides of the nose and chest.
  • Warts are small, fleshy benign bumps on the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called HPV (human papillomavirus) and are contagious.
  • Chicken pox is a viral infection that causes an itchy rash with small, pus-filled blisters. It is highly contagious and there is a vaccine.
  • Psoriasis is a chronic condition in which skin cells build up and form scales and dry, itchy patches.
  • Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and often small, red pus-filled bumps on the face.
  • Hives are welts on the skin that often itch and are triggered by a reaction to food, medicine or other irritants. The rash is not contagious.

If you notice a new bump, growth, welt or mark on your skin that you’d like to get checked out by a doctor, schedule an appointment at Newport Medical Clinic in Port Moody, British Columbia.
